Moneydance 2022 App Reviews

OPINION

Lacking needed overall tutorial from the jump there is a link to talk to chat with a develper or support but no walkthough of navigation. And absolutely no appeal to the layout. Other than that easy to use, tons of smart graphs and reports instantly updated, fairly simple layout once you get used to it. Summary page shows all information in one spot. Also has alot of tools ready to use in the program bar. Is it worth 49.99? My opinion, no. But others may disagree. For that kind of price I just expected a more fluid design and at least a jump tutorial of where to find things and an in app support team. Liking it so far!

I am a longtime user of Quicken on Windows, and have finally entered the Mac realm. I knew Quicken lagged behind on the Mac platform, and read horrible things about Quicken 2016 for Mac. I decided to give Moneydance a try. I really like it so far. It is fast, simple, and just works. I do not use bank connectivity, and would like to have tried wifi sync, but it looks like that feature has been removed. Dropbox sync does work well though, and the software and apps on my mobile devices are enough to do what I need done, and not a bunch of stuff I don’t want. And this software doesn’t seem buggy like Quicken often did, even on the more mature (for Quicken) Windows platform.

Mac Users

I run MacBook Air and IPhones, and Moneydance is perfect. The best feature—Moneydance has an IPhone app that syncs to the database on the Mac. So, we are out and we purchase something for cash, I can enter the purchase, catagorize it, add a memo, and that entry syncs to the database on the Mac. I never miss a purchase! I got out of Quicken and have never EVER regretted the move. Get Moneydance!

Great App

I switched from Windows to Mac about 10 years ago. Since I could not find a Mac substitute for Quicken, i had to continue running Quicken for Windows through Parallels. I could never find a really good mac finance program unitl this one. This one finally let me cut the cord to Windows There is a bit of a learning curve, if you are a long time Quicken user, but it is not that bad. Once you learn it is easy to set up new accounts, bank online, download account info and so on. I actually like it better than Quicken. You don’t get pop up windows try to sell you this or that. And the interface is cleaner, easier to use and faster.

Disappointing to say the least

I have been a quicken user for over a decade on a pc. Swithched to a Mac and read where quicken did not rate well on Macs so tried Moneydance. Been working with it for a couple of weeks now and hate it. Not intuitive at all; not well developed compared to quicken for pc. Looks like I will be keeping my pc so I can use quicken for personal finances and investments. Sure wish quicken for mac would get up to speed….may try it anyway just to see….has to be better than money dance.

Hard to set up biweekly pays

Hard to figure out setting up biweekly pays. Doesn’t offer the option to do every other tuesday…so on and so forth….. its every 1st 2nd 3rd etc. Messes up a major portion of future planning.

Great alternative to Quicken

I have only been using a few weeks, but this program works quite well, supports direct connect bill pay, and the customer service/support is exceptional. If you are looking to get away from Quicken, as you should be, this is a great alternative. Buy it!

Good Alternative to Quicken, reminds me of what I used to like about Quicken.

I have used Quicken on a Mac since 1994. The upgrade process had become increasingly painful and in my opinion the product (Quicken Essentials) itself was not nearly as nice as it had been in previous versions, other than a smoother download process for online banking. As I had to upgrade anyway, I decided to try Moneydance. I was able to transfer all of my transactions, however I lost their associated catgories in the process, which is frustrating. However, the upgrade to QE was just as painful a couple of years ago and I was not particularly interested in the extra cost of Quicken 2015 and apparent continued frustration of upgrading (based upon reviews). Moneydance reminds me a great deal of the Quicken of old with a good user interface and decent graphs and reports. Overall, I’m pleased with Moneydance and have not found any reason to return to Quicken.

I was skeptical but it’s really good!

I have unsuccessfully tried and eventually given up on several other personal finance apps. Moneydance strikes a good balance of being easy to use but helpful for both budgeting and keeping track of your money. My bank doesn’t support direct OFX connections so I have to download my transactions from my bank. It’s easy to import them and categorize them. I tried YNAB but having to manually enter ALL of the individual transactions meant that I never actually did it. I’m nervous about having programs access my accounts automatically so being able to load them manually works great for me.

Horrible, inaccurate, useless

This is the worst app I’ve used in years. 1. Every import of an online account is utterly wrong. My import of my investment data is off by tens of thousands of dollars. My checking account import has the wrong current posted balance AND is missing pending transaction. Absolutely all imported data is wrong, and my checking account import also had duplicate entries. 2. Nothing is explained in the manual that you have to hunt down on the publisher’s website, and what they do explain seems to assume you already understand how the program operates. Completely useless. 3. The app seems to assume you are going to enter every transaction in every account by hand. This is the complete opposite of the purpose in having an app at all. 4. The entire interface is grossly counterintuitive. It’s a joke. Right-clicking on the account doesn’t show the “Edit account” option?? I have to go into the menus for the most obvious ability to edit the account? 5. The app doesn’t remember your online passwords: e-v-e-r-y s-i-n-g-l-e t-i-m-e you want to update your transactions the thing asks for the password for every online account. If you use strong passwords, this is a very tedious endeavor.

Perfect For My Needs

I’ve been using Moneydance for over a year now and love the application. Even though I am not a power user, I mainly use Moneydance to manage my checkbook. One thing that I absolutly love is the ability to attach scans of receipts and attach them to the transaction. The companion apps for the IPhone and iPad make bill paying easier. Enter the transactions on the IPhone app and it syncs to the main program on the Macbook. The interface is nice and intuitive and I was ably to get up and going without much guesswork. The only drawback that I have is the reporting. Moneydance does have all the reports that I need, but I do not have the ability to format those reports when I need to without exporting to a spreadsheet. Even though this is not a major drawback, it would be nice to have that ability when a nice looking report is needed. From all the apps in the App Store, this one, in my opinion, is the best available.

Not bad

I was a Quicken user for a very long time. I purchased a MAC power book and switch to the Quicken for MAC version. Every time i turned around i had issues with it downloading duplicate transactions, crashing, and giving me the wrong balances. I found Moneydance and its not as good as the Windows versions of Quicken but its 100% better than the MAC Quicken versions. If your looking to replace quicken or just starting out Moneydance will work. I would like to see it work more like the Windows versions of Quicken but they are new to this and i would expect improvements.

Fantastic personal finance app

Have been using Moneydance for around 6 months now and am a big fan. I was a die hard Microsoft Money user but eventually threw in the towel when I switched to a Mac. Moneydance does all I need and more and allows me to track my investment portfolio of shares and mutual funds, downloading share prices from around the globe together together with daily exchange rates on the fly. The reporting is fantastic, and the free app for your iPhone and iPad while greatly simplified, allows me to update transactions on my phone which saves time later in the month. Thanks for the recent update, worked fine. Looking forward to the release of Moneydance 2016 later in the year.

ABSOLUTE WASTE OF MONEY as it is now!!!

New update still lacks ability to synch between iMac and MacBook Pro. If the developers don’t want to use iCloud they should at least come up with some way that you can have current data synched between Macs. The IOS version is okay and meant to supplement the OSX, but apparently only ONE (1) OSX machine. So someone taking their laptop on the road and then expecting the data to be current on their desktop is just out of luck!! This lack of capability really limits the usefulness of this app. My questions are: 1. Why not iCloud instead of Dropbox? 2. Why can’t it be a simple fix to allow synching for all my devices? Every other app I have can do it! 3. If you can do this as the app stands then why not have instructions SOMEWHERE that explain how to do it? There are no instructions in the manual or on line. ------------------- Old review below. Cannot synch between Mac Computers. The way it is set up you cannot use this app to synch between computers. It only works between ONE Mac and iOS devices. They say it will synch but the dialogue that opens when you open it for the first time on your second Mac does not allow you to “find” the file in Dropbox (which is required). I have contacted support about this and was simply “blown off”. They either need to fix this or explicitly state that you CANNOT synch between Macs!!! As jokes go on the app store MoneyDance has to be at the top of the list! You can’t synch between computers just iOS devices so anyone with a laptop and a desktop is just out of luck. The people that designed this forgot to explain that their accounts are hidden in DropBox and you cannot open the file because you cannot find it so you can synch. When you first start MoneyDance the choices are totally limited to new, import, update, etc. But try to find a file opened on your laptop and synch it with your desktop you are headed to hours of frustration! If you only want to use this app on one device and not synch then you will be treated to a very unfriendly and ugly GUI. For the most part the app is unintuitive and slow. Bells and whistles that are impractical and difficult to use abound at every turn. But, try to set up a Checking account and a Savings account and use the registers, again you will have hours of frustration facing you. These folks should be forced to use their own software and try to understand how a lay-person feels figuring out the nuances of their labrynth of confusing operations. I didn’t believe that the 39 one star reviews could possibly be accurate or fair. Trust me, they are spot on with the one star rating. Now add this one to the others.

Works For Me

I was a Quicken user for many, many, years. After changing to a MacBook almost two years ago, I continued using my old laptop for Quicken. I finally took a chance on Moneydance after a couple of months with the Mac, and within a short time, learned to really like the program. There are some definite differences between it and Quicken, but then, I never used the Mac version of Quicken. When the Mac version of Quicken finally came out, I felt no need to go back and it was expensive. I don’t use Moneydance for online banking, but for keeping track of my finances and printing checks, it works great for me.

The One I Keep Coming Back To

Over the years, in my search for the perfect checkbook accounting application on the Mac, I have tried innumerable other products including no few that are no longer on the market. But in the end I always come back to MoneyDance as offering the most comprehensive feature set, and being the easiest to use. Unlike some of the competition MoneyDance limits itself to what it dos best without the added feature bloat of non-financial and seldom used features such as home inventory. The changes in this latest update are not immediately noticeable, which is good because that means a) there was nothing major to fix and b) there were no surprises and everything continues to work well. That does not mean this update is not worth installing any security improvements are always worth installing. I received a phone call from my bank the other day warning me that I had to upgrade to the latest version of Quicken or risk losing compatibility with their online system. When I told them I used MoneyDance the caller commented, “MoneyDance is a good application and you should have no problems from our end.” Enough said.

Moneydance!!

This app does everything that I need it too and more...

Could not use at all.

My hope was to find a package that was intuitive to use that had easy online account set up. I need to track around 8 accounts split between Canada and the US. Expectations were Mint.com easy for account set up and old style quicken user interface. None of my US or Canadian financial institutions are supported for online updates. Account setup using imports was easy but I needed to restart the entire process 4 times to get the views I wanted. When updating with new imports I had difficulty getting the balances between MoneyDance and my bank statements to agree. So I was probably doing something wrong, but that leads to the last issue. There are no tutorials or help information. The online support link goes to a “start a conversation” web link. After spending the $ I was prepared to invest the time to get it running, but limitations in online capability, a not so friendly UI and limited help Moneydance ended up in the trash bin.

User for 3 years

I have been using this program for over 3 years. After Microsoft quit supporting Money, I looked despirately for an alternative. I bought and tried many mac programs, but none had the amount of features and usabitlity as Moneydance. ( I actually still use Money for my business account, but manually put everything in.) After setting up Moneydance and using it for a while, everything seems to run pretty smooth. Every once in a while it will have a problem downloading an account, but it is usally due to a safeguard that you have to get around at the account"s website. I don’t use the budget part of the program, so I can’t comment on that. I do use multiple banks, credit cards, and retirement accounts. Most are downloaded automatically. Some, like my local bank, I have to import. Overall, a wonderful program, that I have recommend to many friends.
